The championship series of the super league triathlon kicked off in Jersey on Saturday, with the finale on Sunday turning into an enduro aquathlon event after the bike leg was cancelled due to high winds.
The french were on the top of their game in the men’s race, with first and second going to Vincent Luis and Pierre Le Corre of France respectively. 3rd place went to New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde.
The event also featured the elimination rule on top of the endure race, meaning the last athlete at the end of each leg would be eliminated from the race. To everyone’s surprise the first athlete to go was Jonny Brownlee, who just missed out as he was overtaken by several athletes who had gone with the no shoes approach of Luisa Baptista.
France also had success in the ladies race, which was won by Cassandre Beagrand of France. The ITU world champion Katie Zaferes of USA came second and the Dutch Rachel Klamer took third.
Beagrand lead for most of the race, taking to the front of the first run and never looking back, although we did see some interesting tactics from Luisa Baptista, who skipped putting shoes on before the run to avoid elimination from the race.
Britain’s Vicky Holland and Taylor Spivey finished 4th and 5th respectively, recording the exact same time across the line.
